November 1984, East Berlin: Five years prior to the collapse of the German Democratic Republic, the East German government is reliant on a ruthless system of control and surveillance to enforce its power. Captain Gerd Wiesler, a loyal Stasi operative, sees an opportunity to advance his career when he is assigned the task of collecting evidence on the playwright Georg Dreymann and his actress girlfriend Christa-Maria Sieland. The assignment comes from on high, with the Minister of Culture taking a personal interest in the case. But Wiesler fails to foresee the effects of immersing himself in the world of his “targets”, and the process of surveillance has consequences for the surveyor as well as the surveyed. Wiesler’s immersion in the lives of others leads him to discover love, literature and free thought, making him acutely aware of the paucity of his own existence. He finds himself becoming drawn to a way of life that is very different to his own. But the cogs of the systems never stop turning and a relentless process is already in motion…
At once an intensely gripping thriller and a moving love story, “The Lives of Others” is a story from the heart of the East German regime featuring some of Germany's most internationally renowned actors.
