GFF: No Place To Go
GFF: No Place To Go No Place to Go is a fascinating portrait of middle-aged writer Hanna Flanders (played superbly by Hannelore Elsner), a troubled intellectual torn between her ideals and the realities of a changing society.
Hanna lives in a posh apartment in Munich and clings desperately to the fame she garnered decades earlier as a controversial left-wing writer. But make-up and flamboyant wigs can’t disguise the cracks in the foundations of this lonely woman’s life. In spite of her attempts to cocoon herself from the world by going on shopping sprees in exclusive boutiques and numbing her senses with prescription drugs, she becomes ever more troubled and depressed. With the fall of the wall in November 1989, Hanna’s sense of self is thrown further into question – reunification marks the defeat of the Communist principles championed in her work. Even so, she decides to seize the opportunity and reshape her life by revitalizing her career, tackling her money problems and rekindling an old romance with her publisher. She sells everything she owns and sets out for Berlin, not knowing where she will live.
